‘When I Grow Up I Want to be White' is a short 10 minute comedy and satire.  It is a mental portrait of a so-called Banana named Shannon- an early 20s Australian-born Chinese girl who must learn to confront racism in all its different forms in order to come to terms with her own identity and prejudices.

MAIN ROLES

Shannon
Early 20s. 1st generation Australian born Chinese, with a natural Australian accent and speaks a smattering of Cantonese.  She is embarrassed by her heritage and frustrated by the token racism that surrounds her in daily life.  Good acting skills and comic timing essential.

Mother
Late 40s.  Chinese housewife.  Relatively fluent in Cantonese.  Despite her obvious embrace of Western culture, she is still adamant about upholding the Chinese tradition exemplified by her obsession with dumplings. Her dialogue will involve a hybrid of Cantonese and English.   Hong Kong background preferable.

Dad
Late 40s.  Retired business man.  Relatively fluent in Cantonese.    Since having retired from a high pressure job, he now amuses himself with making home movies and tormenting the cat.  Again his dialogue will involve a hybrid of Cantonese and English.  A minor role.  Hong Kong background is preferable.

Others

Mid to late 20s female.  Australian born Chinese, preferably with a natural Australian accent.  Alternative/Punk looking. Minor speaking role.

Early to mid 20s Chinese male.  Non-speaking role.  Will be dressed in a banana suit.  Non speaking role.

Mid 40s-50s gossiping Chinese woman. Cantonese speaking role.

Non- Caucasian skateboarder. Non-speaking role.
