| Rick Lau |
![]() After leaving his comfortable career (and very comfortable salary) in IT and graduating from the Music Theatre course at NIDA, Rick was hit by the grim reality of the limiting opportunities for Asian actors in Australia. With the support of 4a (Asian-Australian Artists Association) and a funding grant by the Australia Council for the Arts, Rick co-founded Theatre 4a with fellow artist Paul Cordeiro and produced their first production Four x Twenty - four 20-minute short works. Rick is delighted that this little seed has since grown to enable collaboration with the Sydney Opera House, as well as national and international touring of our productions. Hailed by The Australian as a "one-man tour de force", Hong Kong born NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art) Music Theatre graduate Rick Lau has just finished the Australian national tour of Miss Saigon as the first understudy to the lead role of "Engineer" (25 performances). Rick has produced, co-written with Tony Taylor, and performed in his 4 sold-out one-man cabaret shows: SunRice, I know where I'm going...I think, How Now Rick Lau (commissioned by and premiered at The Studio, Sydney Opera House), and Men in Love in Australia, Singapore, Shanghai and Hong Kong. Rick was a Special Guest Headliner at the Sydney Cabaret Convention and has recently performed in the Production Company's Thoroughly Modern Millie in the role of Bun Foo and their Australian touring production of Hair the musical. Rick's other professional theatre credits include the lead roles in Edward Albee's Box & Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-Tung (as Chairman Mao himself!), The Attack of the Granny Boomers, The Popular Mechanicals, Empress of China, Eureka, Naked Boys Singing!, Elegies for Angels Punks and Raging Queens, the River Skaters, Looney Tunes, Pacific Overtures and Four x Twenty, a Performance 4a (Asian-Australian Artists Association) production of which he is the Creative Director. Rick was the co-producer (with The Studio, Sydney Opera House) for Yellowfeather and Four x Twenty: Yellow, the emcee for Scratch Night at The Studio, and Orientation Festival 2004. Proud member of Actors' Equity since 2000, Rick will be staging a return season of Men in Love at the Hong Kong Fringe Club in October 2008. |
