Rick Lau

After leaving his comfortable career (and very comfortable salary) in IT and graduating from the Music Theatre course at NIDA, Rick was hit by the grim reality of the limiting opportunities for Asian actors in Australia. With the support of 4a (Asian-Australian Artists Association) and a funding grant by the Australia Council for the Arts, Rick co-founded Theatre 4a with fellow artist Paul Cordeiro and produced their first production Four x Twenty - four 20-minute short works. Rick is delighted that this little seed has since grown to enable collaboration with the Sydney Opera House and Belvoir St Theatre, as well as national and international touring of our productions.

Hailed by The Australian as a "one-man tour de force", Rick’s professional theatre credits in Australia include the lead role of “Engineer”(u/s) in Miss Saigon, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Hair the musical, Box & Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-Tung, The Attack of the Granny Boomers, The Popular Mechanicals, Empress of China, Eureka, Naked Boys Singing!, Elegies for Angels Punks and Raging Queens, the River Skaters, Pacific Overtures, Looney Tunes, Hello Kitty’s Fantastical Adventure and Four x Twenty. Since returning to Hong Kong two years ago, Rick has played the role of Miles Gloriosus in Chung Ying Theatre’s A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, Prez in The Pajama Game and Snowball in Animal Farm the Musical.

Rick’s other life as a solo artist has seen him producing, co-writing (with Tony Taylor), and performing in his 6 sold-out one-man cabaret shows: My Generation, Men In Love, My Queer Valentine, SunRice, I know where I'm going...I think, and How Now Rick Lau (commissioned by and premiered at the Sydney Opera House) in Australia, the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in Scotland, West End London, Singapore, Shanghai and Hong Kong.

Rick is also a sought-after voice-over artist and backing singer, and is currently appearing in Sandy Lam and Grasshopper’s world tours.
