Four original 20 minute works in different performing arts genres by artists from a diverse cultural background:

·    Omelette by Paul Cordeiro (Movement Theatre)

·    SunRice by Rick Lau (Musical Comedy)


Scripts were selected from public submission, giving new and established playwrights the opportunity to work within a culturally rich environment with professional performers, directors, dramaturges and designers.

Silence

Silence is a play for three Vietnamese-Australian women, written by Melbourne-based Hoa Pham.  It's about the secrets and spirits that haunt us from within.  A family reunited by a death anniversary have to face the possessiveness of history and put the past to rest. Starring Ai Diem Le, Diana Nguyen and Shirley Wong; directed by Wolf Heidecker.  La Mama Courthouse, Carlton, Melbourne.  November 11-22.  Bookings 03 9347 6142.

 
I Could Be You

Melbourne Fringe Festival features this new work written and directed by Hoa Pham.  Shireen, an Indian international student ends up in Maribrynong detention centre. Trapped with Ania and Con her only visitor is Huong, her Vietnamese-Australian lawyer. It's enough to drive her mad...or is she? Based on true stories and the history of the Maribrynong Detention site. Starring Shalini Akhil, Susan Doel , Shane Lee, and Diana Nguyen. At Theatreworks, St Kilda, Sep 23-25 and Oct 5-9.  Tickets on sale 1 Sept from Theatreworks and Melbourne Fringe.

 
Footscray by Night

Taking inspiration from Karaoke culture and the Paris By Night gala join M.C. Bruce Vu in Footscray's own variety night of dance, live music, community singing, interviews and karaoke, accompanied by a series of films made especially for the Big West Festival . Community Artist David Cuong Nguyen and Lead Artist Hoang Tran Nguyen have worked with communities who have social and economic ties to Little Saigon Markets. Their karaoke videos rummage through traditional and urban cultural forms. Wed 16 Nov from 6pm at Little Saigon Market, Footscray.

 
Hannah Skrzynski
Hannah is a Sydney based arts manager, with extensive experience working in the Australia – China cultural field. Hannah has previously spent three and a half years living in Beijing, working on cultural events including the Beijing International Literary Festival and 2008 Beijing Olympics, and then as Senior Culture and Public Affairs Officer at the Australian Embassy Beijing.
